The Super Bowl XLVIII committee has implemented a tailgaiting ban at MetLife Stadium, site of the big game.

This was confirmed by NY/NY Super Bowl Host Committee CEO Al Kelly during a conference about transportation and safety in a Dec. 9 ESPN report written by Jane McManus

"You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in your car. And provided you're in the boundaries of a single parking space, you'll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However, you're not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you're not going to be able to take out a grill, and you're not going to be able to take up more than one parking space. And it'll all be watched very carefully."

Nate Schweber of the New York Times adds, "Barbecue grills and lounge chairs will be forbidden, and all food and drink must be consumed within the space of a single parking spot, a rule that has been in place at the  Super Bowl since 2002."

McManus enumerates three means which fans can go to the game:

"The committee will charter buses called the Fan Express, which will cost $51 and pick up and drop off passengers at nine locations around the region. Fans can also take N.J. Transit to the MetLife Stadium stop or be dropped off by vehicles that must have parking passes."

She also points out only cars with parking passes will be allowed within the stadium's vicinity. Each car pass for the Super Bowl, which will be sold beginning Dec. 12, will cost $150 -- a markup of more than $100 from the regular $25 and $35 regular-season passes.

Meanwhile, Schweber writes only 13,000 parking slots will be available for fans. The other 28,000 spaces are reserved for trucks which belong to sports media outlets responsible for game broadcast and entertainment.

New Jersey Department of Transportation commissioner James Simpson said snow plows would be on hand in case a snowstorm hits. He said,"We have the trucks, management and manpower on hand to fight any kind of weather. Our goal is to keep vehicles on the move."

Super Bowl XLVIII is slated for February 2, 2014
