Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan says he won't resign despite reports to the contrary.

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan insists he is not resigning.

This is what the Redskins mentor stressed when he spoke with The Washington Times' Zac Boyer on Dec. 16. Shanahan said he will talk things over with team owner Daniel Snyder at the conclusion of the 2013 NFL season.

"I'll get a chance to sit down with Dan at the end of the season, after the next two games, and I'll give him my opinion in the direction that I think the franchise could go, and he's gonna give me his idea what he wants to do.

"He's the owner of the football team. But all we could do at the end of the season is communicate, and I think we have that type of relationship where we can talk and be honest to each other, but we're not gonna do that until the end of the season."

And what did Shanahan tell Boyer when he was asked to confirm if he wouldn't be resigning after the season?

"Oh yeah, that's accurate," the head coach quipped.

For his part, Joseph White of The Associated Press writes Shanahan could be back with a new defensive coordinator and a new offensive coordinator. Given the way the team has performed -- Washington is currently 20th in total team defense, allowing an average of 31 points per game -- current defensive coordinator Jim Haslett "could surely be on the bubble," per White.

However, White points out having a new offensive coordinator for 2014 "had seemed improbable" because the person peforming that job function is Shanahan's son, Kyle.

White also says the elder Shanahan "gave a rambling answer" when asked about his coordinators situation and eventually mentioned former Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, who was his offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos and is currently unemployed.

"It doesn't matter if Gary Kubiak is my offensive coordinator, Mike Heimerdinger, Jim Haslett -- a coordinator's coordinator. They've got a job to do. And they're going to do it. If they don't do it, then the chances are they're not going to be a coordinator for long."

In his Dec. 16 article, ESPN's John Keim cites a CBS Sports report which says Kyle Shanahan had been benefiting from favoritism from his father. In light of this, Keim wrote,"Mike Shanahan refuted the notion of any favoritism."

Mike Shanahan also told Keim he can't do anything much about information leaking to the media and that Robert Griffin III will be his starting quarterback next season.

"I can guess where they come from. Hey, not everybody's happy and when you do have three wins, it can be a little tough. A lot of things do come out. It's part of this business. But you've got to be tough enough to work through it, and I think our organization and team is tough enough to work through it.

"When you look behind your shoulder and you know that guy (RGIII) is pretty good, that makes you work a little harder in the offseason. It makes you work a little harder during the week."

This is also precisely what he told White.

"Robert is clearly our starting quarterback...I think Robert's got a lot of confidence in himself and he should. He's got all the ability in the world and he will get better and better every day. And I think that's one of the reasons why we decided to not play him for the last three games. We wanted him to go into the season fully healthy."

Since becoming Washington Redskins head coach in 2010, the 61-year-old Shanahan has amassed a 24-38 (.387) record in 62 games, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com.

With 2014 Season Over, Time for Redskins to Evaluate for 2015 and Beyond

Oct 21 2014 5:00pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

When the Washington Redskins fell to 3-6 nine weeks into the 2012 NFL season, then-head coach Mike Shanahan appeared to be waving a white flag by stating that they'd begin evaluating players for following season. He later clarified that he wasn't giving up on the campaign at hand, but a strange message had already been sent.  Naturally, the Redskins didn't lose again for the remainder of the year, winning the NFC East for the first time since ...

Redskins work to wipe clear the implication that losing is acceptable

Oct 7 2014 6:52pm CDT | Source: Washington Post Sports

When he was handed the reins of the Washington Redskins last January, first-year NFL Coach Jay Gruden inherited a 3-13 team and a locker room that had grown accustomed to strife and inured to losing. Washington lost its last eight games of 2013 amid a standoff between head coach and quarterback. Mike Shanahan was fired at season’s end, but not before benching Robert Griffin III in a move that some interpreted as a final act of defiance and others saw as an attem ...

The Jay Cutler you don't know

Sep 26 2014 11:45am CDT | Source: SBNation

Behind the scowls and glares, there's a different side of Jay Cutler most fans don't know, an intelligent leader who just wants to win. They called it "Bears South.'' It was a couple of training sessions last March in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., featuring Chicago Bears teammates. It was hosted by receiver Brandon Marshall. New Bears safety Ryan Mundy attended the second one. Mundy said 15 or so players were there. Quarterback Jay Cutler was among the ...

Kirk Cousins Proves He's Got a Long Way to Go to Become Redskins' Savior

Sep 26 2014 12:41am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Washington Redskins had a great girlfriend. It looked like a match made in heaven. But the relationship began to sour just beyond that infamous one-year hump. And so they broke up with franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III—at the very least, in the words of Ross Geller, they were on a break—giving them a chance to be easily charmed early this year by backup Kirk Cousins. But that honeymoon period may be over after Cousins threw four interc ...

Alfred Morris Will Be Fantasy Monster vs. Giants on Thursday Night Football

Sep 25 2014 2:46pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After an inconsistent start to the 2014 season, Washington running back Alfred Morris is poised to be a fantasy owner's dream on Thursday night against the New York Giants.  Even though the NFL won't admit it because ratings and money speak louder than anything, playing games on Thursday has hurt the product. This will be the fourth Thursday night game of the season, third with teams playing on a short week and the results from the last two have been horrible.  The combined s ...

RG3′s ankle not broken, optimistic for return

Sep 15 2014 12:24pm CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins are optimistic that Robert Griffin III will return this season. Less clear is how much more Griffin can take before the "injury-prone" label supersedes anything else he accomplishes in his NFL career. An MRI exam on Monday revealed that Griffin doesn’t have any broken bones to go along with his dislocated left ankle, which means he doesn’t need season-ending surgery ...
