Will be big test of character for India: Smith

Johannesburg, Dec 17 (IANS) South African captain Graeme Smith Tuesday said it will be a big test of character for India's batting line-up when the two teams face-off in the first Test here Wednesday.

Johannesburg, Dec 17 — South African captain Graeme Smith Tuesday said it will be a big test of character for India's batting line-up when the two teams face-off in the first Test here Wednesday.

Smith said India's batting wears a different look, especially after the recent retirements of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, and would be a tough challenge for inexperienced batsmen in the two-match series.

"Obviously they're hugely talented but it's a very different line-up to the one I've become accustomed to playing against," Smith told reporters.

"Touring in other parts of the world is a big test of character and that's going to be on show in these two Test matches."

Following the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, India's likely top six have a total of 59 Test caps between them.

"The way we have played has been hugely successful for us. We play the game hard but there's a huge respect factor for the game and our opposition. As the number one team, I would like to see us play some good cricket."

Smith said he expects the going to be difficult for batsmen in the first innings due to the moisture in the Wanderers pitch.

"Both first innings are probably going to be tough. There's a bit of moisture in that wicket and some good cracks. I expect it to be a normal Wanderers wicket of recent times, hopefully with good pace and bounce."

South Africa Team: Graeme Smith (captain), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers (wicketkeeper), JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir.

Was Hashim Amla Too Bold with Declaration at Galle in 1st Test in Charge?

Jul 19 2014 8:26am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

No matter what Hashim Amla decided with regard to his declaration against Sri Lanka during his first Test in charge, it was always going to be under the microscope. If South Africa batted on for too long, he would have been called too conservative. Now, after setting Sri Lanka a target of 370 with four sessions to go, many will be wondering if he wasn’t perhaps being too generous. South Africa’s second innings showed that there w ...

JP Duminy Reaffirms His Talent, Now Must Embrace Senior Role for South Africa

Jul 17 2014 8:47am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

It is perhaps hard to believe, but at the age of 30, JP Duminy is one of South Africa’s more senior batsmen in terms of age and experience in all forms of cricket. With Graeme Smith gone from the international stage and Jacques Kallis now only playing one-day internationals, Duminy needs to step up and be a leader for the Proteas. He made some progress toward that role in his side’s first innings against Sri Lanka, as he made an unbeaten 100 from No. 8 and pla ...
