Ferguson's retirement; Bayern's triumph move football fans

Dec 25 2013, 5:46am CST | by

Beijing, Dec 25 (IANS) From all-mighty Bayern Munich to newly Asian champions Guangzhou Evergrande, and from retirement of Alex Ferguson to David Beckham's final game, football has brought fans smiles and tears in the year of 2013.

Beijing, Dec 25 — From all-mighty Bayern Munich to newly Asian champions Guangzhou Evergrande, and from retirement of Alex Ferguson to David Beckham's final game, football has brought fans smiles and tears in the year of 2013.

European champions Bayern Munich claimed their fifth title of 2013 as they lifted the Club World Cup with a 2-0 win over Raja Casablanca, Dec 21, reports Xinhua.

The German club have already claimed the Bundesliga, German Cup, Champions League and European Super Cup.

"Congratulations to Bayern for an incredible 2013," said coach Pep Guardiola, who only took credit for one of those four trophies after replacing Jupp Heynckes in the late June.

Earlier this month, the World Cup Draw was unveiled Dec 6. FIFA's seeding system and draw procedures triggered controversy once again because under those rules, Belgium, Uruguay, Colombia and Switzerland, were all seeded than more famous teams like Portugal, Italy, France, England and the Netherlands.

After the draw, Groups B, D and G all have claims to be the tournament's most difficult. Group B comprise world champions Spain as well as the Netherlands and Chile, Group D boasts three former World Cup winners in Uruguay, England and Italy, while Group G has Germany, Portugal, Ghana and the US.

The host country Brazil's inner unrest also provoked worries, as the draw was staged against a backdrop of anti-government protests, which began during the Confederations Cup in June.

Football fans were also shocked as Ferguson announced his retirement May 8, ending his legendary career that included 13 English League titles, five FA Cups and two UEFA Champions League trophies in his 26 years in charge at Old Trafford.

Apart from his excellent coaching experience, Alex is also considered as a talent developer as he helped develop many famous football stars such as David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona, Gary Neville, Paul Ince and Bryan Robson.

Ferguson's memoir, My Autobiography, released on Oct. 24, also turned out to be bestselling sports book in many countries.

Ferguson's most famous student Beckham also a bid a teary farewell to the game. The 38-year-old former England captain made his final home appearance for Paris St Germain in the Ligue 1 champions May 16.

Barcelona and Argentina No.10 Lionel Messi, Real Madrid and Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich and German midfielder Frank Ribery will fight for the title, after FIFA announced the shortlist recently.

The award in each of last four years all went to Messi, and Ronaldo claimed the title in 2008 and has been repeatedly placed second since then.

Messi led Barcelona's charge to the Liga title last season with 46 goals, while Ronaldo has not only played well for Real but also helped his country qualify for the 2014 World Cup finals. Ribery has also had a fabulous season with five-star Bayern Munich.

The unpredictable result will be unveiled at the FIFA Ballon d'Or gala in Zurich Jan 13, 2014.

Louis Van Gaal Continues to Shape Man Utd Perception with Preseason Criticism

Jul 23 2014 7:26am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Manchester City v Manchester United - Premier League
Louis van Gaal continued to steal the Manchester United headlines this week by lambasting the club's pre-arranged preseason tour to the USA. The Red Devils have traditionally travelled far and wide to exercise their brand during the rusty months ahead of Premier League action, but the Dutchman is not a fan of his new club's tendency to show the squad off around the world. Van Gaal told reporters in Los Angeles (h/t BBC Sport): ...

FC Internazionale Unveil New Signing Nemanja Vidic
One of the key challenges that Louis van Gaal faces in his new post as Manchester United manager is the rebuilding of the once-great Red Devils defence. The departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic—both past their prime but still decent—is a huge blow for the Old Trafford outfit, as they have represented part of the team's core for many years now and through many great successes. The players Sir Alex Ferguson brought in to potential ...

Sir Alex Ferguson Appointed UEFA Coaching Ambassador
After realising it must be a good three weeks since he was in the headlines, Alex Ferguson has announced that he will be releasing an updated version of his autobiography this October. To be fair, an awful lot has happened since his book launch last year and the update will include his thoughts on David Moyes’ ill-fated time in charge as well as other goings on in Ferguson’s life over the last 12 months. A state ...

Why Patrice Evra Was One of Manchester United's Best-Ever Players

Jul 21 2014 10:46am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Sir Alex Ferguson Appointed UEFA Coaching Ambassador
“Manchester United are inspired by Manchester United, not by Liverpool or by any club,” said Patrice Evra, in an interview with Norwegian TV2 earlier this year. The Frenchman’s understanding of what it meant to play for United, twinned with his excellent ability on the pitch, will surely see him go down as one of the club’s all-time greats. Better technical players have graced the Old Trafford turf, but few have immersed themselves in the culture of t ...

There can be little doubt that the release of the first edition of his book was not timed brilliantly for Moyes or the club. Another edition updated with SAF's opinions of last season will be interesting. Will LVG be happy with SAF back in the spotlight? From ManUtd.com Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography was published in October 2013 and became the fastest-selling non-fiction book since records began. ...

Van Gaal can’t wait to make changes at United

Costa Rica v England: Group D - 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil
No manager’s opening press conference deserves to be taken especially seriously. That’s a given. Because, quite simply, the agenda at these things isn’t the truth. The agenda is, first of all, trying to look impressive—whether that be powerful, knowledgeable or cool—and, second of all, trying to make the upcoming job easier in any way possible. So, when Louis van Gaal sat down and said he planned to spend “three or four weeks” assessing his new Manchester United squad before ...
