Former NFL safety Darren Sharper was arrested on Jan. 17 in Los Angeles on suspicion of rape

Corina Knoll of The Los Angeles Times wrote more details in her Jan. 18 article

"Sports commentator and former NFL player Darren Sharper was arrested Friday in Los Angeles on suspicion of rape, authorities said. 

"Los Angeles police said the 38-year-old had been linked to sexual assaults that took place in West Los Angeles last October and earlier this month. 

"Sharper, a resident of Miami Beach, was arrested around 3 p.m., according to police and information posted on the L.A. County Sheriff's Department website. 

"He posted $200,000 bail Friday night."

In addition, the New Orleans Police Department said a Sept. 24, 2013 sexual complaint against Sharper is currently being investigated, according to WWL-TV, where the former five-time Pro Bowler served as a football analyst for a month in August 2012. 

For his part, NOPD spokesman Remi Braden emphasized the sensitivity of the investigation

"As with every case alleging sexual assault, information gathered is extremely sensitive and the top priority of the detectives is to protect the person who filed the complaint. Because this is an ongoing criminal investigation, we cannot provide additional ilnformation at this time." 

The NFL Network released a statement saying it has suspended Sharper indefinitely without pay. Part of it reads,"We are suspending Darren without pay until further notice, effective immediately."

The same update also states the network "does not comment on pending legal action" per policy. 

Knoll adds Sharper's court date is set for Feb. 14. 

The 38-year-old Sharper played for the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints and tallied 63 career interceptions, per ESPN.
