Another letdown from Team USA in Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

Shani Davis Disappoints USA in Speed Skating

USA had lots of hope from the ongoing Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. But things aren’t going as we have hoped earlier. While a few athletes from Team USA lived up to our expectation, the favorites so far continue to disappoint us. Among them, Shani Davis, the star speed skater, might be the biggest disappointing name who finished at 8th position. It is really disappointing as everyone expected that he will become the first speed skater to grab the victory in this event three times in a row. This must be really frustrating for Shani as well.

As it was the first time for USA to participate in the Winter Olympics in Russia, every one of us at I4U were excited and confident that our athletes will start this month long sport event with flying scores. This time, we had around 280 athletes who are competing in different events in this Olympics, which started 5 days ago in the city of Sochi, Russia. But our hope was mostly on a few selective events among which Speed Skating was the biggest one. So far, USA got two gold medals in this event in the previous two Olympics in a row and it was the same Shani Davis who won them. In line with this, our hopes were all time high that he will make the record of winning this event in three consecutive Olympics. 

The Speed Skating event was full with action as top speed skaters from around the globe lined up together at the starting point. Shani Davis, along with his mates in Team USA were really optimistic about winning a gold medal in this. But things didn’t seem good when he started his lap. He was falling behind from others right from the beginning and when he completed his first lap in this 2 ½ lap race, others were way ahead of him. He finished the race within 1 minute 9.12 seconds, which is quite behind the time of Stefan Groothuis of Denmark who got the gold medal. If you didn’t know, Groothuis was also a favorite competitor with high promises this time. Although he was going through some hard time including depression, he didn’t disappoint his fans and earned the fourth gold medal in five speed skating events. His winning time was 1 minute 8.39 seconds, which is really impressive. Next to him was Denny Morrison from Canada who finished in the second place and got the silver medal for his time of 1 minute 8.43 seconds. This is a great thing for this young athlete as he wasn’t even scheduled to compete in it. But he was included in the last moment as one of his teammates was unable to complete. 

But things weren’t that good for Shani Davis at all. His performance in this event was a clear sign that he might be losing his charisma on the ice. However, what we really liked about him is his sportsmanship. Even though he was frustrated with his performance, he was man enough to congratulate Groothuis, with a tap on his back.
