Epic Marathon on Ice in Sochi 2014: Team USA beats Russia in Ice Hockey

You can cut the tension with a knife whenever USA goes face to face with Russia in any sport. Although Team USA and we have a great sportsmanship, we can’t accept defeat from a few nations and Russia is definitely one of them. This is why; we were really excited to see the Americans beating Russia in the Ice Hockey event in Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. This was a great game and each team showed their best. But it was USA that won the game.

This epic game was played between USA and Russia on Saturday in the Bolshoi arena and everyone was excited about this game. The fast-paced game was played in front of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a massive crowd. From the very beginning, both the teams were playing with their best and there was hardly any boring moment in it. This was such an intense match that it is now being referred as the Marathon on Ice. While playing the game, the grudge between these teams was ever so high and everyone could remember 1980 when USA defeated invincible Russia in the same game. While Team USA was inspired by that win 3 decades ago, the Russians were also intrigued about not to repeat history again. But the USA team finally won the game in the shootout.

It was T.J. Oshie who scored four times in the shootout and got the win in the eighth round. He was accompanied by Cam Fowler and Joe Pavelski who also scored in regulation for the Americans in the marquee game of the preliminary round. But it was Oshie who made the day for the Americans. According to international law, the same player can take multiple shots right after 3 rounds of a shootout. So there nothing stopping Oshie to take multiple shots and he didn’t disappoint us. It was crazy that a single player scored four times and led the USA to a crucial victory. In addition to that, we can’t ignore Jonathan Quick who made 29 saves and stopped five attempts in the shootout. Without him, it would have been almost impossible to defeat the strong Russians. The Russians were also playing quite well in the game and they were so good that we had to go to the shootout for the winning verdict.

But this was not an elimination or knockout round.  Both of the teams are still in the game and they equally have the chance to win the gold in this sport. However, the truth is that both of these teams will play again tomorrow and Team USA will be competing against Sloveniawhile the Russian team will go head to head against Slovakia. We will also see top favorite Canada playing against Finland and Sweden against Latvia on the same day. So there is more action in future. While Team USA was excited with the win, the Russians were also optimistic about their future. Even with the setback, they are confident about their gold medal and they are mostly concerned about Canada. Although Russia and Canada are not in the same group, there is a chance they might meet in the Knockout round.  Meanwhile, Team USA in now busy with celebrating their win and also preparing for future games.
