On the 9th day of the Sochi Winter Olympics, Team USA had to get behind to make place for the new leader, Netherlands. It was only a few hours ago when we were delighted to inform you that Team USA has reached to the top of the medal count in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. Though we were really happy with this, the joy wasn’t there to last for a long time. Within a short time, Team USA has fallen behind in the race as Netherlands reached to the top with 17 medals in total. With 16 medals still in the hand, Team USA is now sharing the second place with its archrival Russia.
It might sound absurd and make our last post “Team USA shares the top position in the Sochi 2014 medal ranking” a joke, but this is true. With less than 24 hours, USA has moved from the first position to the second position. It was the athletes from the Netherlands who were breathing at the neck of Team USA and Russia before. Now that they have made an amazing breakthrough, they are leading the charts with 17 medals while team USA hasn’t won any medals right after our last post. Although it might be a little bit upsetting for Americans, there are many more events in the future and definitely a chance to win back the top position.
Right at the moment, things are still the same for USA and Russia who each have got 16 medals. USA has four gold medals, four silver medals as well as 8 bronze medals. The Russian team also got the same number of medals among which they have got four gold medals, seven silver medals as well as five bronze medals. But Netherland is now leading the pack with 17 medals, including 5 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals in Speed Skating. They have also got a bronze medal in the Short Track event as well. This brings their total medal count to 17 and makes them the leader in the ranking. It is apparent that they are doing something really great in the Speed Skating while others are falling behind.
However, compared to other competitors such as the USA and Russia, they are only good in one event i.e. Speed Skating. Contrary to them, USA has won medals in different events including Speed Skating, Free Style Skiing, Snowboard, Alpine Skiing, Skeleton, Luge and Figure Skating. It shows that this is a balanced team and there are many athletes who are yet to bring in glory for Team USA and the Americans.
This is why; we are taking this as a minor setback and not getting depressed with this fall back. At I4U, we are now still cheering for our athletes to do better and get back to the top. The Russian camp is not sitting and according to the day 10 medal predictions, we are sure that the medal standing will change very soon. Who knows, Team USA might come to the top position once again. So keep in touch as we update you again about the medal count on the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
