The Los Angeles Kings acquired right wing Marian Gaborik in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 5 for right wing Matt Frattin and two conditional draft picks.

The Los Angeles Kings acquired right wing Marian Gaborik in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 5.

The Kings issued a press release about Gaborik's acquisition on their official website:

"The Los Angeles Kings have acquired forward Marian Gaborik from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for forward Matt Frattin, a second-round draft selection in the 2014 or 2015 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round draft selection, Kings president/general manager Jim Lombardi announced today.

"The second-round pick in 2014 or 2015 going to Columbus was previously acquired in the Jonathan Bernier deal with Toronto."

Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen told ESPN Los Angeles that Gaborik didn't fit the team's long-term plans.

"Gaborik wanted it to work and we wanted it to work. But it didn't, and we both had to move on.

"You can have a big name and a big career, but it can be hard to find a fit somewhere. He just didn't fit."

The 32-year-old right wing has been dealt just before the trade deadline for the second consecutive year. The New York Rangers traded him to Columbus on April 3, 2013 for Derek Dorsett, Derick Brassard and John Moore.

Nonetheless, Gaborik expressed interest in joining the Kings "a long time ago" -- particularly during their rebuilding process, writes Lisa Dillman of The Los Angeles Times.

"Gaborik was interested in the Kings a long time ago, and Kings general manager Dean Lombardi had toyed with the idea of bringing in the forward with game-breaking potential. Timing is everything and it all finally came together shortly before Wednesday's trade deadline."

Lombardi clarified to Dillman the timing just wasn't right back then.

"I didn't feel the timing was right. I wanted to get things done first. I think we're in a position now where we can feel good about taking him and he wants to be here. This isn't a (Thomas) Vanek situation, in my mind, where the player has already said,'I want to go to July 1 to test free agency."

However, he had been eyeing Gaborik -- a three-time 40-goal scorer -- for the past two months, notes Rusty Miller of The Associated Press (via Yahoo! Sports). While the Kings, the 2012 Stanley Cup champions, have allowed only 134 goals, they have struggled offensively scoring just 152 of their own.

Lombardi told Miller Gaborik would fill a missing void in his team.

"We're a very good team, but if you're looking at what you could add to the mix, I guess it's fair to say it's a player who can make something out of nothing with his speed and ability. You want to make sure your team has all the weapons necessary, and I think this is one weapon we were lacking.

"There's very few players that are capable of doing what he does in his game. There was a very short list for us, and one of the reasons we initiated discussions is he's one of very few people we thought would be available."

Lombardi also tells Miller Gaborik -- a free agent after this season-- has dropped hints he plans to re-sign with the Kings. He was earning $7.5 million per season with the Blue Jackets.

Gaborik suited up in just 22 games for Columbus because of a collarbone injury. He posted six goals and 14 points during that span.

For his part, Frattin had a short stint with the Kings, registering six points in 40 games. Dillman points out Kings head coach Darryl Sutter took Frattin aside after practice in El Segundo, Calif. to inform him about the trade with the Blue Jackets.

Frattin told Dillman he understands the nature of the business and he's hoping for a fresh start in Columbus.

"It's a business and that's what happens. It's going to be tough leaving this group of guys. At the same time, hopefully get a lot more ice time there. It's a fresh start and they're  a good team in the playoff hunt."

Who Should Be the New York Rangers' No. 6 Defenseman in 2014-15?

Aug 21 2014 9:54pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The New York Rangers made a number of transactions this summer to bolster their roster, but there are still some roles that need to be filled for the upcoming season. One role in particular is the No. 6 defenseman spot on the third pairing—a role John Moore occupied last season. Moore is currently a restricted free agent without a contract, although all signs point to him being back with the club for the 2014-15 season. Andrew Gross of The Record reported that Moore received a qualif ...

Dustin Brown Is Los Angeles Kings' Biggest Question Mark for 2014-15

Jul 24 2014 10:01pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Despite winning two championships in the past three campaigns, Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown has some questions to answer in 2014-15. He’s coming off a disastrous regular season that saw him post his lowest point total (27) since a 31-game rookie year in 2003-04. He managed more points (29) in 2013’s 48-game year than he did in 79 contests last season. Now, offensive production is by no means the be-all and end-all of hockey—particularly Kings hockey—but that’s a really, real ...

Breaking Down Los Angeles Kings' Offseason Injury Concerns

Jul 10 2014 8:48pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings have had a good start to the offseason—for the most part. They had a good draft, re-signed Marian Gaborik to a long-term contract and locked up Matt Greene. The team looks just as strong, if not stronger heading into the 2014-15 season than it did in the previous five years. However, injuries and lingering health issues are always a concern, even in the offseason. Two L.A. players unde ...
