The Vancouver Canucks hired former team captain Trevor Linden as their new president of hockey operations on April 9, replacing Mike Gillis.

The Vancouver Canucks hired former team captain Trevor Linden as their new president of hockey operations on April 9.

The Canucks made the announcement on their official website

"The Vancouver Canucks announced today that Trevor Linden has been named President, Hockey Operations and Alternate Governor, NHL. Linden returns to the team he played on for 16 seasons, including seven as team captain.

"In his role, Linden will be responsible for all hockey operations, including the coaching and scouting staffs, player procurement and development, and minor league affiliations and operations.

"Since retiring after 19 seasons in the NHL, Linden has resided in Vancouver where he has led a number of successful business ventures ranging from commercial/residential development projects to fitness club chains.

"He has also remained involved in the community through the Trevor Linden Foundation."

Linden told the website about his passion for Canucks hockey upon his hiring.

"Today is a real honor. I came to Vancouver 26 years ago and I have never left. I love this city. It is my home and the Canucks have always been part of my family.

"I'm passionate about the Canucks and I want to win -- just like our fans. I believe in this team and share the organizations commitment to excellence on and off the ice. I am looking forward to getting started -- getting to know everyone in the organization, and working together to win the Stanley Cup for this great city and province."

Linden said it was an opportunity he could not pass up on and one that he's ready for, per The Vancouver Sun's Brad Ziemer.

"When this opportunity to be president of hockey operations was presented to me I gave it great thought and I simply could not pass it up. Through my 20 years as a player, 15 years with the NHLPA and my more recent work in growing and leading a private business I believe I am ready for this challenge.

"I am young, I am passionate about this team and I learned a lot...I am looking forward to getting started, getting to know everyone in the organization and working together to deliver a championship-caliber team to this great city."

Canucks Sports & Entertainment chairman Francesco Aquilini said Linden's extensive hockey experience should serve the franchise well.

"It's my honor to officially welcome Trevor Linden home in his new role as president of hockey operations for the Canucks. We believe in Trevor's leadership abilities. His 20 years of NHL experience including seven as team captain, his role as NHLPA president, community leader and businessman offers a very special skill set, one that will positively shape the direction of this club in the future."

Ziemer stresses Linden's first order of business is to hire a general manager. Vancouver's new president of hockey operations is hoping he's have his man by early June.

Linden said,"This is a process I have to thoroughly evaluate. We will do a general manager search from within and from outside our organization."

In terms of Canucks head coach John Tortorella's job security, Linden would not dwell on that for now, notes CBC News' Mike Laanela. All he hinted at was he needed some time to look into Tortorella's situation.

Linden told Laanela,"I need to get more into this with the coaching staff here."

In the end, he always had a premonition he would return to the Canucks in some capacity, per NHL.com's Kevin Woodley.

Linden quipped,"You don't play 20 years in the National Hockey League and spend your whole life in hockey and not have it in your DNA. I always kind of thought I would be back. I never wanted to work for another organization."

He takes over the post vacated by Mike Gillis, who was dismissed by the Canucks just a day before.

Linden has also taken the ice for the New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals  from 1988-2008. He wrapped up his NHL career with 375 goals and 492 assists for 867 points, according to NHL.com stats
