Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson believes college athletes should be paid, per multiple reports.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson believes college athletes should be paid.

Peterson told The Associated Press' Jon Krawczynski (via Yahoo! Sports) on April 9 these athletes should be compensated more for the millions of dollars they bring into their respective schools:

"Former NFL MVP Adrian Peterson advocated for college athletes on Wednesday, saying they deserved to be paid for the millions of dollars they bring to school coffers and took aim at NBA commissioner Adam Silver's stated desire to require college players to spend two years in school before declaring for the draft.

"Peterson said he felt a kinship with Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel as a fellow high-profile athlete who generated significant revenues while he was in school at Oklahoma."

Peterson made it plain and clear the players are the ones responsible for a huge chunk of those revenues, per Krawczynski.

"When I was in college, I know personally, as far as jersey sales and ticket sales, I helped make that university a lot of money. Johnny Manziel helped make Texas A&M so much money. You're talking about championship games that he was able to lead those guys to. You're talking about jersey sales that he don't see a dime of.

"I feel as much money as universities make, I feel that some of that money should be given down to the players as well because we are the ones that are making this university money. These bowl games? Without the players, how much money do they make? None.

"Without the players how much money do they make? They make no money without the players."

Peterson then discussed the NBA's proposal of requiring prospecitve draftees to stay in school for two years before turning pro, notes The Associated Press report.  He used the example of of Miami Heat forward LeBron James, who made the jump straight out of high school to the NBA in 2003.

"I hear they're trying to make basketball players go two years to college. Wow. I wonder why? Just think about it. Imagine if LeBron James would've had to go to college for two years. How much money would that college have made off of LeBron James? They would've made so much money off LeBron James."

Back in September, Peterson told Bob Sansevere of The St. Paul Pioneer Press college athletes should get monthly payments with increased stipends.

"I definitely think they should be paid a little more -- some sort of monthly payment. Increase the stipend by $1,500 or $1,600. Even more than that.

"(College football programs) make so much money, why not? Give guys something to look forward to."

On Sept. 16, NCAA president Mark Emmert said "virtually no university president...that thinks it's a good idea to convert student-athletes into paid employees. Literally into professionals," per Sansevere.

Meanwhile, NFL.com's Dan Hanzus reports Peterson, who had groin surgery in late January, is almost in peak physical conditiion and plans to take part in offseason workouts. The 2012 NFL MVP traced the injury to a Nov. 3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

"I can't really put a date on it, but I do look forward to participating. Right now the most important thing is getting healthy and that's what I'm doing. I'm rehabbing, working out still, trying to get the body back where it needs to be.

"I can't sit here and say that I'm back right now, but I am not far off at all."

Peterson rushed for just 1,266 yards in 14 games in 2013 --- just one season after he gashed opposing defenses for 2,097 yards, Hanzus notes.
