Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is expected to sit out six to eight weeks after he tore a ligament in his left thumb in the seventh inning of the game against the Seattle Mariners on April 8 while sliding headfirst into first base.

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks due to a thumb injury.

Alden Gonzalez of the Angels' official website reports Hamilton tore his thumb's ulnar collateral ligament and capsule while sliding headfirst into first base in the seventh inning against the Seattle Mariners on April 8:

"Josh Hamilton began the 2014 season as one of baseball's hottest hitters, picking up where he left off to finish an otherwise miserable first year with the Angels and looking a lot more like the five-time All-Star from Texas.

"Then he decided to slide headfirst into first base, and now he could be out until June.

"An MRI Wednesday morning on Hamilton's left thumb, which he banged against first base in the seventh inning at Safeco Field the night before, revealed that he had suffered a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament along with a torn capsule.

"The 32-year-old outfielder has already been told by the Angels' medical staff that he will need to undergo surgery, which carries an estimated recovery time of six to eight weeks, but it won't be official until he meets with hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin on Friday."

Hamilton thought it was just a jammed thumb, but when he tried throwing between innings he suspecetd something was amiss. He was consequently placed on the 15-day disabled list. The Angels also recalled outfielder J.B. Shuck from Triple-A Salt Lake, notes The Associated Press (via ESPN).

Hamilton told Gonzalez he regrets having been injured, but that's just his style of play.

"Any time you play and you're playing hard and you're having fun, that last thing you want to do is do something that's going to cost you to miss time and mabye hurts your team in the long run.

"If I could see the future, obviously I wouldn't do it. But in the moment, when my mind and body tell me to do something and react some way, I've always done it. That's what I do. You can't change that."

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said last year Hamilton drove him nuts whenever he did that during his tenure in Arlington, per Mike DiGiovanna of The Los Angeles Times.

"He drove me crazy when he did that. You have a 240-pound guy who is as fast and as explosive as he is...you just cringe when he dives in. You're saying,'Get up! Get up!' But that's his style of play. I don't think you can take that from him."

In spite of Hamilton's injury, Angels manager Mike Scioscia told The Associated Press he's confident the team will do well in his absence.

"It's definitely unfortunate but I think as a team you have to be able to absorb and be deep enough to absorb injuries to players and Josh is a special talent who is off to a great start for us. We'll do our best to fill that void.

"Over the years, we've had a lot of key players miss significant time, but we've been able to absorb it and move on. That's when we have to focus on doing now for the next six, eight weeks, whatever the time frame is going to end up being."

On the other hand, ESPN's Jim Caple writes the team should be relieved ace outfielder Mike Trout, who recently signed a $150 million contract extension and is regarded to be the best player in the majors, will not slide headfirst into first base.

Trout said,"I heard it slows you down. I like to dive headfirst into second or third but they say you lose a step and it slows your momentum down. And there is the risk of getting hurt."

Before he injured his thumb, the 32-year-old Hamilton had 12 hits for two home runs and six RBIs on a .444 batting average in eight games for the Angels, per ESPN stats

The Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels met in the first of a four-game series Thursday night, a series we may very well see again in October. The game itself had a playoff atmosphere, with defending Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer starting for the Tigers and All-Star snub Garrett Richards for the Angels, and superstars Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout playing on the same field. However, based on the outcome, the Angels can’ ...

Beef brews, but Halos get last laugh vs. Mariners

Jul 20 2014 7:22pm CDT | Source: Yardbarker: MLB

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Maybe it was all in good fun. Maybe it wasn't. When Seattle Mariners pitcher Fernando Rodney pulled an imaginary arrow from his quiver and fired it at the Angels in the eighth inning Sunday afternoon, it left an impression in the Angels dugout. They didn't like it.  "Fernando's animated," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Our guys noticed it." Rodney assumed he had a win locked up, but the Angels ...
