WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is currently discussing a five-fight contract extension with Top Rank -- a deal which will ensure he will still be fighting through 2016 at the age of 38.

Manny Pacquiao is currently discussing a five-fight contract extension with Top Rank

ESPN's Dan Rafael wrote about the development on April 29:

"Manny Pacquiao and longtime promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank are discussing a five-fight contract extension that would take the Filipino superstar through 2016, which would coincide with Pacquiao's wish to fight for two more years.

"'Yes, we are talking about the extension,' Arum told ESPN.com. 'We are working it out. We are talking about a lot of things. How many fights would be in Macau, how many would be in the United States, how many in other places. But we are talking about five fights.

"Arum said if the deal is completed, it would likely mean a fight this fall followed by two fights each in 2015 and 2016.

"Pacquiao's existing promotional agreement with Top Rank runs out at the end of this year, but he has stated time and again that he is loyal to Arum and hopes to finish his career with him, perhaps even to the detriment of making the biggest fight in boxing, a match with pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who has steadfastly refused to do business with Arum, his former promoter.

"Arum has promoted Pacquiao since 2005, just before he began his historic run up the scale that saw him win world titles in five of the record eight weight classes he has claimed belts in."

With this, Arum also told Lem Satterfield of The Ring Magazine on April 28 that Pacquiao has an assortment of future opponents to choose from.

"We've had a very good discussion and pretty much a meeting of the minds, but we still have to sort out the details. The fact is that there are plenty of future guys for Manny to fight.

"Manny can fight the winner of (Juan Manuel) Marquez and (Mike) Alvarado, he can fight Ruslan Provodnikov, and there are a lot of guys that are out there because there are guys developing all the time who are serious, serious competitors, including hopefully and obviously Floyd Mayweather. Manny has many, many possible opponents.

"As the years pass, there will be others, for example, who wouldn't want to see him in against Miguel Cotto again if Miguel Cotto is successful against Martinez?

"Indeed, who wouldn't want to see Pacquiao against (Sergio) Martinez if Martinez is successful, and can come down in weight a little bit. Pacquiao might even decide Martinez or even Canelo Alvarez."

However, as many as Pacquiao's options with Top Rank are, his adviser Michael Koncz told Rafael nothing is final and they are exhausting all of their possible options.

"I have had conversations with Bob about an extension, but nothing has been finalized. Do we fight again this year or take some time off and fight next year? There are a lot of things to work on, but the new agreement we are discussing would entail five fights. That's our intention, barring injury.

"Bob has been good to us over the years and we have been good to him. We may sign with him or we may not. We have other offers on the table and we will look at all our options and decide what's best for Manny, but I don't want to discuss the particulars because I don't want to offend other people."

Koncz also told Rafael he and his camp are looking at moving Pacquiao down to the 140-pound junior welterweight division to further increase the number of his possible opponents. Koncz emphasized he would love to see Pacquiao fight in different venues such as AT&T Stadium (formerly Cowboys Stadium) and Macau, two places where the boxing legend fought previously.

The 35-year-old Pacquiao upped his record to 56-5-2 with 38 knockouts after a unanimous decision victory in his rematch against Timothy Bradley on April 12 to claim the WBO welterweight title belt, per ESPN.
