LeBron James Could Return To USA Basketball Per Jerry Colangelo

LeBron James just might return to USA Basketball.

USA Basketball executive director Jerry Colangelo has hinted at James’ possible return. Colangelo said this during an interview with SiriusXM’s NBA Radio on July 29:

“Well, I think LeBron wants to be part of it. You know, when you talk about LeBron, Dwyane Wade, Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo (Anthony), they were the four young players who were, what, 19 years old, 20 at the best, who were added to the roster when some people dropped out at the last minute.

“They weren’t quite ready for prime time, if you think back. They just weren’t, and it’s a little bit of a disservice in some ways, but the NBA was looking to promote young, up-and-coming stars, and I get that.

“That’s one of the reasons why I was asked to take over the program. I said, ‘Look, I’ll do it, but it has to be complete autonomy, no more committees, no more politics. I’ll pick the coaches, I’ll pick the players if I’m going to be responsible.’

“That’s the only way you can really turn the program and make it successful. So, we deal with it as it comes.”

USA Basketball will organize a minicamp in Las Vegas in August. Colangelo said players who want to play in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics must attend, per NBA.com.

Kevin Love has expressed wants to attend the three-day minicamp, per ESPN’s Marc Stein. However, he is not expected to have fully recovered from his shoulder injury by then.

2013-14 NBA MVP Kevin Durant also plans to attend the minicamp, per USA TODAY (via ESPN). He is coming off a 2014-15 NBA season where he played in only 27 games due to a foot injury.

Stein says Durant will not play during the minicamp. The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar is aware he has to attend if is to represent the U.S.A. in Brazil next year.

Chandler Parsons and Paul George will also attend the camp, per ESPN. George will unlikely play, per Stein.

Blake Griffin and James Harden will also be present in Las Vegas, per several ESPN sources.

The New York Post (via ESPN) also revealed Carmelo Anthony will go to the Las Vegas minicamp.

Rounding up the list of participants are Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Harrison Barnes, Andre Drummond, Mason Plumlee, Bradley Beal, Gordon Hayward, Mike Conley, Jr., Michael Carter-Williams, Tobias Harris and Victor Oladipo, per ESPN.

The USA Basketball minicamp will be from Aug. 11 to 13 at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas campus. The first two days will feature non-contact workouts.

The final day’s highlight will be an intrasquad scrimmage, per ESPN.
