Arsene Wenger Impressed With Mesut Ozil In Arsenal's 2-1 Win Over Crystal Palace

Arsene Wenger is all praises for Mesut Ozil’s passing skills.

Wenger marveled at Ozil’s performance during Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace F.C.

Wenger dubbed him “magnificient,” per Mirror Online’s Mackay:

“He had a very good performance. He was important getting out from the back, getting out of tight areas.

“It is a pleasure to watch the quality of his passing and the intelligence of his passing.

“He was absolutely magnificent.

“What I liked in his game today was he made many runs without the ball behind the defenders, which is a bit new as he likes to come with the ball. Today he mixed up his game better.”

According to Chris Harris of, Wenger started Alexis Sanchez instead of Axel Oxlade-Chamberlain. Wenger said Alexis would be “difficult to stop” once he’s on his game.

Wenger made another change. He started right back Hector Ballerin for the game at Crystal Palace on Sunday. Mathieu Debuchy came off the bench instead, per Harris.

Santi Cazorla returned to his usual center midfielder position. Francis Coquelin and Aaron Ramsey fortified Arsenal’s midfield, per Harris.

From the opening whistle, Arsenal seemed to be in much sharper form. It is coming off a 2-0 loss to West Ham United on Aug. 9, per

Olivier Giroud took Arsenal’s first attempt but missed. Ozil then sent the ball Alexis’ way. Crystal Palace goalkeeper Alex McCarthy thwarted his attempt, per Harris.

Arsenal got on the board first on the 16th minute. Ozil streaked from the left side and found Giroud. The latter then volleyed the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Harris says it’s Giroud’s third goal in his last five games against Crystal Palace.

Giroud scored all three goals on the road, per

Twelve minutes after Giroud scored, Crystal Palace would equalize. Defender Joel Ward lined up a shot from 25 yards out. It was too much for Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech. The score was now tied at 1 apiece, per Harris.

Crystal Palace had an opportunity to take the lead in the opening moments of the second half. Wilfried Zaha sent a cross to Connor Wickham. The latter attempted a volley but it bounced off the post, per

In the ensuing possession, Alexis passed the ball to Ramsey. He tried to look for Giroud in the back post, but Crystal Palace diverted his pass from behind, per Harris.

Cazorla then passed the ball to Ramsey. The Arsenal midfielder attempted a left-footed shot but missed.

After Alexis tried to win a header, Crystal Palace’s Damien Delaney tried to divert the ball. However, it went into the net to give Arsenal a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute, per Harris.

Coquelin played well but an official gave him a yellow card for arguing. Arsenal sent in Oxlade-Chamberlain for him.

Jordon Mutch and Chung-Yong Lee had their chances to equalize for Crystal Palace. They couldn’t convert. In the end, Arsenal held on for the much-needed victory, per its official website.

Wenger told Mackay this was one win Arsenal needed to get:

“We needed these three points from when we lost to West Ham; we needed to bounce back.

“It was a mental test to see how we would respond. After we got the second goal, we fought well. I am pleased.

“This is a difficult place for teams to come and win.

“To get the three points could be a turning point for us.”

Arsenal is now 11th in the Barclays Premier League standings. It has a 1-0-1 record for three points. Crystal Palace has the same record. It is in sixth because it has a lower goal difference (1) compared to Arsenal (-1).
